SAN RAMON — Going for a more restrictive approach than many other East Bay cities have taken in the Prop. 64 era, the San Ramon City Council has rejected any sort of marijuana dispensary  — medical or otherwise — from operating within city limits.

With some East Bay cities opting to keep as much marijuana outside of their boundaries as possible, others are embracing the opportunities for taxation and serving residents who said at the ballot box they support legalized marijuana. Many are forging a middle path. But virtually all of…

Five Signs That Florida is Bungling Its Medical Marijuana Industry

Florida’s Republican-dominated legislature can barely pass basic laws like tax cuts or budget plans without tripping over themselves or spiraling into intra-party screaming matches. The state legislature is so bad at writing its own laws that, as the Miami Herald astutely pointed out last week, gigantic companies like Florida Power & Light have to write entire laws for them. The current legislature is a Stygian pit of bad ideas.

So naturally,…

TALLAHASSEE — When voters made California the first state to allow medical marijuana in 1996, the rules were so lax, anyone with a doctor’s recommendation could grow their own cannabis.

Not until next year will the Golden State start to regulate its growers. State ID cards are voluntary for patients, making it impossible to track everyone who is legally using medical cannabis there.

That’s not how the legalization of the drug is unfolding 2,500 miles away in Florida, where state lawmakers are writing new rules to govern a…

John Oliver explored America’s frustratingly inconsistent marijuana laws on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, proving how individuals complying with state laws could still be at legal risk. “If you have marijuana right now, even if you are acting completely legally according to your state, you may still be in serious jeopardy,” the host said.

If you look at the numbers, it’s a great time to be a weed-smoker. Forty-four states currently have some form of medical marijuana law, and eight have…

If you have been paying attention to what’s going on in the cannabis “space” (a perfect word for this industry, really), you have probably heard of CBD — cannabidiol — or wondered what it is.

CBD is one of two important compounds in cannabis.

The other, of…
